コランダムは酸化アルミニウムの結晶なのですが、そこに微量のクロムが入ると赤いルビーになり、チタンや鉄などが入ると青いサファイアになるのです。
さらに言うと、ルビー以外のコランダムはすべてサファイアなのです。ピンクになればピンクサファイアですし、黄色はイエローサファイアと呼ばれています。
