ビタミンカラーのオレンジ色が元気をくれるようなカーネリアン。玉髄と呼ばれるカルセドニー族、オニキスやタイガーアイなどと同じく、広くは水晶の仲間です。

カーネリアンは古くから神聖なる石、お守りとして重用されてきました。
紀元前2,500年頃のシュメール王朝の墓からカーネリアンの首飾りが発見されています。
また、イスラム教の始祖ムハンマドは護身の石として用いたといいます。
10世紀ごろにはアラビア語でカーネリアンに聖なる言葉を刻むと、邪悪な企みや嫉妬から身を守ると信じられていました。
ナポレオンはアラビア語を彫ったカーネリアンで8角形の印章を作っています。
