The South Sea pearlis pearlfrom a large bivalve shell called the white-lipped mussel. As a mother shell, it is the largest in the world, with a diameter of more than 30 cm.
There are two types of white-lipped shells: one called pearllip, which has a yellowish goldlayer, and the other called silver lip, which is white like Akoya.
