古代には月の神が宿ると信じられていたムーンストーンは、長石、フェルスパーという石の仲間。長石は地球の岩石の中で、もっとも普遍的に存在するといわれますが、それが美しいムーンストーンとして生まれることは、とても希なことです。じつは、このレインボームーンストーン、正確に言うとムーンストーンとは別の仲間です。ムーンストーンは正長石に属し、レインボームーンは、ラブラドライトやアンデシンといった石とともに、斜長石に属すのです。
正長石も斜長石も、構成されている元素もほぼ同じで、そして同じように光の帯、シラーが出現する石ということで、ひとくくりにムーンストーンと呼んでいるのです。
