強くやさしいグリーンのいやしを日本では孔雀石といわれるマラカイト。不透明ながら、鮮やかなグリーンが、古代から人を魅了してきた石です。
群青のラピスと並び、絵画などの顔料として多く用いられてきました。クレオパトラが粉末をアイシャドーとして用いたとも言われますが、マラカイトの粉は肌には刺激が強くかぶれるとされますから、現代では虚偽と言われます。
孔雀石と呼ばれたのは、石の模様が同心円を描き、孔雀の羽に似るからです。グリーンのもとは多く含まれる銅イオン。銅の錆び、緑青と同じです。
ちなみに、グリーンは自我に働き、自分自身を見つめ直すのに役立つ石とも言われます。
